ADLER APHASIA CENTER STUDY GROUP, OCTOBER 31, 2017

At this season’s first study group, over 30 NCJW BCS members and friends had the pleasure of hearing Elaine Adler, co-founder of the Adler Aphasia Center. Elaine shared her incredible story about establishing this renowned center that helps people who suffer from this communication disorder. As she tells it, when her late husband, Mike, suffered a stroke and became severely aphasic, she was faced with the challenge of finding help for him. When none was available, they put their efforts into creating a center that would provide services for both patients and families. What resulted is now a world-recognized treatment facility that includes not only speech therapy, but also support for emotional and social needs. What an incredible difference this woman has made to help others….and she’s an NCJW life member!

In addition, Shelby Klein, CEO of the Adler Aphasia Center, provided further information about the great work resulting from Elaine’s vision. Shelby noted that with aphasia a person can experience feelings of severe isolation and depression. The center helps both patients and families achieve independence and feelings of greater self worth.

Stuart Herman, a recently retired financial advisor and spouse of an NCJW BCS member, spoke about his rewarding experiences volunteering at the center. He announced an upcoming orientation for new volunteers. In addition, several audience members commented on the center’s tremendous impact on their lives.
