THE STATE BUDGET IS A MORAL DOCUMENT
This is an advocacy alert message regarding Women's Healthcare Issues in NJ and a link (http://vimeo.com/13866289) to the video of a press conference presented by Senator Weinberg and her Assembly counterpart, Linda Stender.
The NJ State Budget was passed. It slashed funding for New Jersey's family planning health centers. They are bracing for reduced hours, layoffs and closings after Gov. Christie's veto of a bill to restore $7.5 million for women's health services. No other governor has targeted family planning in this way.
In response, the Senate and Assembly passed bills (S-2139/A3019) that would have restored $7.5 million in this years budget for women's healthcare funding. Christie vetoed the final senate bill. Assembly woman Linda Stender-D and Senator Loretta Weinberg-D are working to override the Governor's veto. Please see the linked video tape (http://vimeo.com/13866289) of the press conference.
NJ Senator Loretta Weinberg mentioned NJ NCJW's support of the Bill. We must respond to this crisis!
Call your NJ State Legislators . Senators who voted to pass the bill should be thanked and encouraged not to change their vote on the override. (Republican supporters of the bill are saying that they will not vote to override Christie's veto.) Those of you who live in districts whose legislators did not support the bill should CALL TODAY and ask that they reconsider.
If anyone is unsure of their state legislative district you can find it online, e-mail one of us, or consult the back page of your NCJW,BCS Calendar 2009-2010.
Thank you for making a difference to women, children and families in New Jersey. THIS IS OUR MISSION.
