The Presidium.

We come from the Bronx; Nutley, NJ; Manhattan; Brooklyn; and Los Angeles. We are or have been librarians, teachers, educational consultants, fundraisers, administrators. Among us we have 13 children and 20 grandchildren. We have been members of NCJW/BCS for a total of 166 years.

In those years we have been section presidents, vice presidents, treasurers, chairs of community services, advocacy and education programs, Stay-at-Home, Nominating Committee, Future Financial Planning, Evaluation, Awards Committee, Bylaws and myriad other jobs. We have been NCJW National Board members and Commissioners. We are the proud recipients of Women of the Section and Emerging Leader awards.

The five of us – Fran, Lucy, Ann, Ina and Marilyn – acting as a presidium, will be working with and advising the Vice Presidents and other officers as they perform their duties throughout the year. We are anticipating an exciting and productive 2010-11, working to increase our membership and our coffers, providing interesting programs and study groups, giving voice to NCJW values as we advocate on the state and federal levels, supporting our community services with volunteers and dollars, making our thrift shop the best it can be, challenging new leadership to step up. We can do this – with your help, with your participation and with your enthusiasm.

We love NCJW. If you do, too, join us. Let us know how you’d like to get involved. We can’t wait to hear from you.

Children's laughter echoes from the otherwise quiet lake. Adult counselors observe the very ordinary scene without. Nothing special going on here. Or is there? These children are the very special residents of a treatment facility and range in age from 5-16. Many have been removed from their families of origin for various reasons, mostly abuse of some kind. Yet here they are able to enjoy 2 weeks of fun and play, away from the usual medication and treatment facility. Kids, just living the life of normal kids.

A young mother, not quite out of her twenties finally has a safe haven away from the boyfriend who has been beating her for several years. She and her young son are living in the shelter and preparing to more to a transition apartment. Now learning the skills she needs for living and attending night classes.

Water in the pool provides free for the multiple sclerosis patients who attend the water therapy program that BCS helps provide at the JCC on the Palisades each Wednesday afternoon. To the casual observer would notice a group of adults socializing in a pool. For the "swimmers" a wonderful break from their difficult existences.

Formally isolated blind seniors gather for a birthday party. Preschoolers develop school skills from their parents as their first teachers. Transition housing is arranged for women and children.

You have made these wonderful things happen. Your generosity has improved the lives of many of the most vulnerable citizens of Bergen County. You are responsible for our 87 years of empowering, educating and advocating for the women children and families here in Bergen County and in Israel.

Our efforts have been recognized and over the past 12 months BCS has been the recipient of 3 major awards. YCS (Holley Center, Kilbarchan), Center for Food Action and Children's Aid has honored us for our service to the community and dedication to their goals. Your commitment has made it possible for us to renew the spirit behind NCJW's foremost goal "to repair the world".

We can't stop now! Today, with progressive ideas facing great challenges, it is more important than ever that strong compassionate women take action.

The continued financial support of our membership is critical if BCS is to remain a positive force for change. Over the next months we will offer a number of fund raising opportiunities including Stay at Home - personal giving, raffle, journal ads, installation luncheon, boutiques, tribute cards, and others. Please join us and support our efforts.
