NCJW OUTRAGED BY ATTACK ON PLANNED PARENTHOOD

NCJW Calls on Political Leaders to Stop the Rhetoric and Work to Prevent Gun Violence

NCJW Stands with Planned ParenthoodNovember 28, 2015, Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today expressed outrage over the attack on Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:

“NCJW is outraged by the act of domestic terrorism carried out against Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs and saddened by the deaths of two civilians and one police officer. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victims.

“We are also outraged by the trail of lies and vitriol directed at Planned Parenthood that has set the stage for this violence. We call on all of our political leaders to forcefully denounce these murders and to end the vile rhetoric that has made the occurrence of a crime like this only a matter of time.

“The Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs reportedly stored bullet proof vests for precisely such an attack. That is what we as a nation have come to: a perfectly legal health care provider operating 700 health centers in communities across the country fears for the lives of its staff and patients due to an atmosphere created by the reckless language of too many in public life. Unfortunately this attack may have a chilling effect on people who rely on the services of Planned Parenthood such as cancer screenings. In fact, 97 percent of their services do not involve abortion.

“We don’t yet know how the murderer acquired his weapons. Whether legal or not, it is clear he should not have had a gun. We share President Obama’s frustration that there seems to be no amount of violence that would move Congress to act on legislation to prevent gun violence. We pledge nevertheless to redouble our efforts to see such laws enacted in the wake of yet another senseless day of terrible loss.”
