Activism: Making Change remains the theme of the festival that has put Teaneck on the map. Gun control, a woman’s right to choose, LGBTQ rights, the refugee crisis, Fair Trade — these are just some of the issues that will be addressed at TIFF 2016. The four days — November 3-6 — when Teaneck is the “the center of the film world” will include independent features, documentaries, and shorts that inspire discussion, debate, and the desire to do something to make a difference. Saturday night’s Centerpiece Event, at Temple Emeth, will include the feature film, Sold, about human trafficking. It is sponsored by Wise Older Women (WOW), which is honoring NJ Assemblywoman Valerie Huttle (an NCJW life member) for her efforts to end human trafficking in the U.S. Ms. Huttle will participate in a talkback following the screening.

NCJW BCS has joined TIFF as a partner this year and, with State Senator Loretta Weinberg (an NCJW life member), will sponsor an important film: Robert Greenwald’s new documentary, Making a Killing: Guns, Greed, & the NRA, that includes personal stories from people across the country who have been affected by gun violence. The film exposes how the powerful gun companies and the NRA are resisting responsible legislation for the sake of profit, thereby putting people in danger. Senator Weinberg will participate in a panel discussion following the screening.

Ticket sales begin in October, online and at Teaneck Cinemas: opening night (Thursday, November 3), $10; weekend passes (Friday – Sunday), $35; individual tickets, $8 in advance and $10 at the door; online, $8 + service charge. Saturday night Centerpiece Event including refreshments, the feature film Sold and a panel discussion, $25 per person tax deductible contribution, or $35 per person at the door. Find a list of films and descriptions plus details about tickets and venues at www.teaneckfilmfestival.org, or call 201-203-1723. Check it out, make a contribution, sign on to volunteer, and come to the movies!
