BERGEN FAMILY CENTER ADULT DAY CARE CENTER NEEDS YOUR HELP

There are two programs at the Bergen Family Center Adult Day Center. They are the Life Program, which provides living independence for the elderly, and the Shining Lights Program, which aids the visually impaired.

The Shining Lights Program is the only program of its kind in Bergen County. It helps people from ages 18 to 101. The NCJW BCS members give one-on-one shopping assistance, one day a month. We also provide a once-a-month Birthday Party for all whose Birthday occurs in the month. Ice cream - with all the fixings - cake, songs, small games, and token gifts, which raise the spirit of everyone.

The Center can use a lot of additional help. You are truly needed if you can lead an art class; perform or teach a musical program; set up a small gardening or plant project; lead an exercise group; or teach any kind of mind-expanding subject.

You will be more than repaid by the hugs and kisses that you will receive.

ALL CHILDREN DESERVE TO FEEL SPECIAL ON THEIR BIRTHDAY!

To put a smile on a child's face, please sponsor and/or deliver a birthday cake for a child living at Holley Child Care Center in Hackensack. Only 35% of these children have parents or relatives who can celebrate their birthday with them. For some children, this is the very first time that anyone has specially picked out a cake just for them and made their day into a celebration. The YCS Holley program houses boys and girls aged 6 to 12 years old who, because of their own needs or that of their family, cannot live at home and require the services of a residential treatment facility. Children generally spend eighteen months in this long-term program and our Bergen County Section is committed to enriching and enhancing their time at Holley.

Please contact Edna Lewitz to sign up for the month of your birthday, or in honor of your children's and/or grandchildren's birthday or allow her to call on you when she needs you.

PROJECT LITERACY NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Project Literacy is a private non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to increasing the literacy skills of adults in Bergen County so that they may achieve basic survival skills, parenting and citizenship skills, employment and further education. In furtherance of their goal they formulate literacy action plans for companies, groups or individuals and implement new literacy initiatives. Project Literacy oversees a free tutoring program for the people of Bergen County and the surrounding area and administers a scholarship program to the disadvantaged in the community who wish to attend literacy classes at Bergen Community College.

This year, Project Literacy's Executive Director and Board of Trustees reached out to NCJWBCS for tutor volunteers. The PL board consists of individuals from corporations, social service agencies, colleges, small businesses, community groups and the media working together to improve literacy in the community.

How to Become a Project Literacy Tutor
Project Literacy provides a 12-15 hour program of tutor training for qualified adult volunteers interested in teaching basic reading, writing, spoken English and ESL. They also provide a one session orientation program for qualified volunteers interested in basic math.

The tutor-student matcher completes an assessment to determine the tutor's background and available tutoring times. The matcher will then match the tutor and student, giving particular attention to individual needs and experience through an initial interview with both the student and the tutor. The matcher communicates with tutors and progress reports are submitted by tutors on a quarterly basis.

Contact Harriet Breuer, our Volunteer Liaison, to sign on for training sessions.
Any questions about the program contact Bea Podorefsky
