Advocacy Workshop
Lindsay Morris, NCJW’s Grassroots Advocacy Manager in Washington DC, visited BCS on December 9th to conduct an Advocacy Workshop for our members. Twenty-five women braved the rainy elements to learn how to advocate more effectively. We discussed the importance of advocacy and how we can influence the opinions of others through the use of education programs and publicizing our ideas. Lindsay explained the important steps that are needed to prepare a successful action plan, namely the what, why, who, where, when and how. She explained that we should think through all of the above factors and know what our end goal is to have a successful advocacy effort. She stressed the need to work together and build relationships with like-minded people in our community, i.e. coalition partners, to increase the effectiveness of our actions. Lindsay described the many different parts that are needed for a successful advocacy project and how all of our varied skills and strengths can be utilized. She gave us many ideas to strengthen the Section’s advocacy program. And now the work is up to us!
