Happiness is Camping with YCS

Happiness Is Camping thumbnailWhat is Happiness Is Camping for YCS Kids?

  • waking up to the chattering of birds…
  • gliding across a still lake in rowboat…
  • singing the camp song before digging into three hearty meals each day…
  • splashing in a cool pool on a hot day with noisy friends…
  • holding hands and singing at day’s end…
  • falling asleep to the sound of crickets…

Bright and early on Thursday, June 26, nine BCS volunteers piled into a YCS bus and headed off for the approximately 1 ¼ hour ride to 145 scenic acres of woodland in Hardwick, New Jersey near Blairstown, to spend time with the kids from YCS (Youth Consultation Service). YCS is one of the community services supported by NCJW BCS. The 100 plus youngsters get to enjoy two weeks at this amazing camp, a facility shared later in the summer by kids with cancer.

On arrival, we hit the ground running with the kids to share ball games, “friendship” jewelry-making, exotic sand art creations, glitzy nail polishing, and other fun stuff in the open air. With our friends, the staff from YCS, we toured the spacious cabins with their modern showers and bunk beds. We were ready for the fresh, delicious, bountiful, healthy lunch, and an opportunity to chat at our tables with the YCS campers in the modern, fully equipped dining hall. NCJW BCS was recognized and thanked for its participation to rousing applause.

After lunch, we continued our guided tour of the camp which has a recreation building for rainy day activities and dances (with computer center, library and video center for movies, TV and stereo); an arts and crafts workshop; a full size swimming pool; a climbing tower, adventure and ropes course and complex for tennis and basketball. We saw the fleet of paddle and row boats, canoes and kayaks and heard stories about successful “catch and throw-back” fishing exploits in the sparkling lake, night-time camp-fire sing-alongs (with “S’mores”, of course), and all those good things from where memories are made.

Proudly donning our new YCS camp tee-shirts, we had one last group photo with our friends from YCS before heading back to Teaneck. We wish them all a wonderful summer as they carry on camping.
