ADVOCACY IN ACTION – The Period Project

NCJW Bergen County Section is partnering with NCJW/Essex to advocate for the passage of S3645/A3868. The legislation will provide free feminine hygiene products for students grades 6 through 12 in New Jersey’s public schools.  The legislation takes meaningful strides to address gender disparity in our education system where girls’ needs are not being met. A lack of feminine hygiene products affects their freedom to study, to be healthy and to participate in daily life with basic dignity.

On September 24, 2019 representatives from NCJW Bergen and Essex met with State Senator Loretta Weinberg to ask her to co-sponsor this important legislation. Following a discussion of this legislation and related issues, Senator Weinberg agreed to champion this legislation.

During the next several months we will take steps to advance S3645/A3868 through the New Jersey Legislature and simultaneously work to improve the distribution of feminine hygiene products at New Jersey’s correctional facilities.

If you are interested in advocating for this issue which we are calling the Period Project, please contact Joan Cooper at grammyjoan18@gmail.com or 201-461-7748.  We need advocates to help young women who miss many days of school every month due to being unable to purchase adequate feminine hygiene products.
