CELEBRATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF WOMEN’S RIGHT TO VOTE

On Monday, February 10, NCJW BCS partnered with the League of Women Voters of Northern Valley to celebrate the centennial of the 19th amendment which gave women the right to vote.

The event featured Carol Simon Levin who reenacted the history of the women, many of whom were from New Jersey, who struggled to make their dream a reality. These women lobbied, paraded, lectured, collected signatures and picketed for 72 years. They were assaulted, ridiculed, jailed, pelted with prayer books, and humiliated by the press. Ms. Levin described the ebb and flow of the Suffragette movement, speaking of many of the greats who fought so valiantly for its passage including Abigail Adams, Antoinette Brown Blackwell, Lucy Stone, Alice Paul and Carrie Chapman Catt. A hallmark event occurred in nearby Tenafly in 1880 at the Valley Hotel on County Road when Elizabeth Cady Stanton attempted to cast her ballot only to be denied because she was a woman.

Many members of National Council of Jewish Women Bergen County Section were in the audience for this informative, enjoyable program. The evening culminated in a well-attended reception, providing an opportunity to share views and meet and greet Ms. Levin at her book signing.
