Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.

A Faith in the Future. A Belief in Action.

ISRAEL THROUGH A GENDER LENS

At our Israel Affairs Study Group on May 1st, Dina Charnin, NCJW’s Director of Israel Policy and Programs, shared with an engaged and enrapt audience of forty women her immense span of knowledge, passion, and hope for the future of the status of women in Israel. She told us about the great strides being made by brave women of various backgrounds, many of whom are supported through NCJW’s programs, to overcome discrimination in the public sphere and the many challenges they face in achieving women’s progress. More and more Israeli women activists are demanding their fair and equal rights and NCJW is helping them develop a stronger voice at all levels of society.

Dina told us that she lived for two years in a Muslim Palestinian Israeli town, working for an organization dedicated to building cooperative projects and how this developed friendships and engendered harmonious Jewish-Arab relations.

We heard about the groundbreaking research project that NCJW co-sponsored and recently completed on the status of the women’s agenda. The project culminated in a national conference for feminist leaders from throughout Israel, together with the 60 Jewish American women who had taken part in a trip to look at Israel through a gender lens. Among them was our own Peggy Kabakow of NCJW Bergen County Section.
