JERSEY CITY JAUNT – June 19, 2018

Forty-two members and non-members visited the most culturally-diverse community in the country.  Sophia Penkrat, our expert guide from the Jersey City Office of Cultural Affairs, provided an overview of the history of Jersey City and showed us the city’s rich architecture — from the brownstone houses constructed during the Civil War to the late 1890s Victorian and Classical style City Hall built from late 1892 to 1896 to modern-day high rises. She showed us five of the more than 100 large murals created by established and emerging local, national and international artists throughout the city.  We enjoyed some “delicious grub” at the Brownstone Diner and a few of us enjoyed a quick stroll through Van Vorst Park.  We ended the day at the Liberty Science Center where we watched the “Wonders of the Night Sky” in the Giant Dome Theater. We left fascinated with Jersey City and many are eager for a second jaunt.  There is much more to explore in Jersey City!
