WE EXPERIENCED JEWISH HISTORY, A TASTE OF SPAIN, AND POP CULTURE!

On TuesdayJune 18, 41 members and friends visited Congregation Ahavas Sholom, the last remaining synagogue in Newark born of the great European migration at the turn of the 20thcentury. Eric Freedman, president of the congregation, spoke passionately and eloquently about the history and present state of the synagogue. Congregation Ahavas Sholom is an egalitarian, Conservative synagogue with a traditional service that welcomes all Jews. Read more www.ahavassholom.org

Our next stop was in the Ironbound section of Newark for lunch at Casa Vasca. We enjoyed a lavish three-course Spanish lunch consisting of four appetizers, three main dishes, dessert, coffee and sangria.

The newly opened Grammy Museum at the Prudential Center was our final destination. We reboarded the bus at 4 PM feeling very satisfied spiritually, gastronomically, and culturally.

The magnificent nineteenth mahogany arc at Congregation Ahavas Sholom, originally graced Temple Beth El in NYC, was installed in 1927 and is the oldest arc in NJ and among the oldest in the United States.
